Vestibular physiotherapy FAQs
- What is BPPV and how is it treated? – Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo causes intense dizziness when moving your head, commonly when getting into/out of bed. This is due to displaced crystals (otoconia) in the inner ear. It often recovers within a few weeks naturally, but if not positional movements of the head, called The Epley manoeuvre, is successful in most cases.
- Why do I feel dizzy when I turn my head? – There are many causes of dizziness, the most common is BPPV but there are other conditions also affecting the vestibular system, such as vestibular neuritis, labyrinthitis and Meniere’s disease.
- Vestibular neuritis: what is it and how can physiotherapy help? – Vestibular neuritis is caused by inflammation of the nerve running between your inner ear to your brain. This causes symptoms of vertigo which are initially very intense then ease off to milder but longer lasting symptoms. A vestibular physiotherapist can help improve the specific areas where your balance is impacted most, providing advice on how to make small changes that have positive life impacts. They will also guide you on which exercises will help reduce the symptoms of dizziness and imbalance.
- What is PPPD? – Persistent Postural-Perceptual Dizziness is one of the most common reasons for long-lasting dizziness. It often follows on from an acute vestibular condition, resulting in sensations of unsteadiness/dizziness for months or years. This is due to the brain becoming more ‘hypervigilant’ and anticipating sensations of swaying and moving without there being a physical cause for this feeling.
- When should I see a vestibular physiotherapist? – If you are experiencing vertigo, dizziness or unsteadiness that is effecting your daily life, then a vestibular physiotherapy review would be recommended.
